Training the Speaking Voice
Here's an ugly truth: We are judged by how we speak, write, and think-in that order. As Oscar Wilde said, "Deep down, we're shallow."
That's why it's crucial that we speak our thoughts in a manner that is easy to understand, and inspires trust and respect in our listeners.
Training the Speaking Voice provides voice and speech training for executives and professionals who want to improve their impact when they speak.
Typical goals of voice and speech training include:
- minimizing the effect of a regional or foreign accent
- speaking more slowly
- speaking with more authority and expression
- improving enunciation, projection, and clarity
Voice and speech training is a process that improves the ability to:
- support the voice with more effective breathing
- release habitual tension embedded in the speech process
- open up the resonance and texture of the sound
- develop the ability to produce accurate and clear vowels and consonants
- bring variety and color to increase clarity and attention
Training the Speaking Voice demands concentrated attention and the willingness to explore how sound is made and speech is produced. Speaking is a set of physical (and psychological) habits that we can change. The exercises open up new possibilities for self-awareness and personal growth.
Typical voice and speech training issues include:
- speaking too softly
- speaking too quickly
- lack of expression (monotony of pitch, volume, and speed)
- too many "ers" and "uhms"
- an accent that makes the speaker hard to understand
Training the Speaking Voice isolates and addresses each one of these voice and speech issues with targeted exercises that will improve the speaker's clarity and credibility.
How our Voice and Speech Training Works
Training the Speaking Voice is either a series of small group seminars or a private one-on-one engagement with an executive. Success occurs when a concentrated course of study consisting of a series of classes leads to new, more effective habits.
Voice and speech training begins with a diagnostic test which enables us to diagnose where the problem lies and what exercises are required to correct the problem.
Then, together with the individual(s) and management, we design a series of short classes to successfully make the desired changes.
During the course of the engagement, we make individual digital recordings that are designed specifically to address personal needs. These can be used in the car, at home, or anytime the client has a moment to concentrate on the desired results.
We can provide telephone and web-based consultations when appropriate. Training the speaking voice is most effective when done in person, but occasionally can be supplemented with more cost-effective, time-saving approaches.
At the end of the process, we give the diagnostic test again to measure progress, and to supply each individual with specific exercises to continue on their own.

Don't let something as minor as poor pronunciation or lack of vocal credibility undermine a career. Such problems can be fixed, and in a relatively short period of time.
I look forward to speaking with you.
